[C320-list] water heater

Did something stupid when opening up for spring (apparently spring is gonna last 3 days and then winter is coming back).  Filled all the water tanks, turned on the water heater (elec part) and waited for my hot water; it didn't come. After some mental trouble shooting, I remembered that I by-passed the water heater for winterization and I hadn't reconnected it.  So the heating element in the heater was heating air-not water. I don't think it liked heating air because once I plumbed the heater back in and it filled with water, still no hot water.

My question is  whether I burned out the element or is there some sort of tripping safety feature that needs to be reset?  The breaker on the panel did not trip.
