[C320-list] refinishing companionway stairs

Tony, perhaps you misunderstood me. I haven't done it; but, if I were using
polyurethane I would think a non-skid additive would be necessary. However,
with Waterlox tung oil I've not found it necessary to add anything. I've
never used Ultimate Sole; but, I've seen it at boat shows. I think the
Waterlox finish is very comparable to Ultimate Sole.

As I wrote this I started to have questions of my own, so I called a local
Watercraft store where they sell this stuff. Here is what they told me:
Waterlox is a modified tung oil finish and will penetrate the wood grain and
leave a hard, dry surface. Unlike a varnish or polyurethane that is a top
coating that floes out into a super-smooth, glass like finish, Waterlox is
more like an oil finish. The original Waterlox sealer/finish is not
suitable for exterior use. However, they make a marine grade product that
has UV and mildew inhibitors for exterior use. They also make a marine
grade sealer on top of which to apply the marine finish for a hard glossy
exterior finish.

I've been happy with original Waterlox on the cabin sole; but, will think
about using the marine grade on the steps as they are subject to more
weather and abuse.

I used Ultimate Sole about 5 years ago and it worked great, great anti skip
properties. The company did go out of business but I also heard that
another company had bought the rights but have not seen anything on the
market. If it comes back out I would highly recommend it.

I have an early model hull #30 so I have had to refinish different areas
over the last few years. Some of the damage was beyond a light sanding. I
found rather than heavy sanding which can buy you more work than you can
image I use a stripper and take the item down to bare wood. I use Dad's
Stripper this stuff works great great the best stripper I have ever used.

By going down to bare wood I was able to achieve a even finish. This is
more work but for me it was worth it.

I need to refinish my steps and will strip each. Since Ultimate sole is out
of business I too am looking at the best approach. Upon Warrens suggestion
I went to home depot and got a anti skid additive. They did not have the
one by sackrete but had one by valspar going to test this out and see how it
works.

Don't know if others have had this problem but when I sanded my steps for
efinishing I went through the original finish (or very thin layer of veneer
I'm ot sure which) in a couple of places with pretty light sanding. When I
arnished them the looked like they had measles-all blotchy and darker in
laces. I had to remove all the old finish at that point and re varnish them.

ade an easy project into a real project. They, in the end, look great but
just e careful with the initial sanding.

hat is correct. One of my guys talked to a company out of NJ I think that
had ought the rights to manufacture. Not sure why it has not resurfaced, it
erformed well and got great reviews.

I can understand that with a polyurethane an anti-skid would be needed. I
used a tung oil product from Waterlox (www.waterlox.com) on our cabin sole
and it has not only held up very well, but is relatively slip-free when
damp. I've been thinking about doing the ladder and will probably use
Waterlox on that too.

I've also heard good things about Ultimate Sole for interior spaces; but,
haven't heard much lately. Also, can't recall seeing them at the last
Annapolis Boat Show.

I added Quikrete Anti-Skid floor texture additive to my clear polyurethane.
The additive turns clear when you mix it into the poly. Stopped slippage on
the companion-way stairs instantly, you feel it but don't see it. Put it on
4
seasons back and it still holding up well. I got the additive a Lowes for
about $5.

Does anyone know what product to use on the companion way stairs? They are
in good shape and only need a rough sand and then a finishing of some kind.
I have a can of the Catalina interior stain. That works very well for
everything inside the boat. I am not sure if its rugged enough for the
stairs.
