The strainer on my shower pump was almost completely blocked (so now I can say, I am not losing my hair - just storing it in the strainer).
Once cleaned, it was back to normal.

Any air leak, regardless of how small, will make it tough for a prime. I've had problems with the strainer and getting an air tight fit in the past.
Good luck!
