I also found this technique to work. I assumed that it aligned the tube in
the cylinder. Getting in and out of the settee one leans on table which
could cock thus jam the post in the cylinder.

Make sure the lock nut knob is loose, then slam the top of top table above
the post, with your hand. Sounds weird but it has something to do releasing
the pressure inside the center tube.

A small dehumidifier draining into the galley sink will keep the moisture away--worked for us for 17 years.? Ken

Marlo,

I hang DampRid bags to take extra humidity out. I think I was on the verge of mold- I had a dank, mildew smell down below, and the bags took care of the smell. I have to change them every couple of weeks, but that's a small price to pay. As far as getting rid of the mold, I use Clorox spray cleaner-not straight bleach, but a cleaner with some bleach, available in any supermarket or department store. It kills the mold and cleans up nicely. Just avoid spraying on fabric.

This is another example of why I am so fanatical about drying out the bilge before I leave Serenity. My air conditioning also drains into the bilge and doing this keeps it from getting musty.

We bought one at lowes for about $180 for the boat. Hooked up a section of hose so it drains thru galley sink.

Ours was the same way, probably from not being used in a long time but it wouldn't budge. I sprayed some silicone on the shaft for good measure and then as stated here push hard OVER THE POST, when you do get it down just wiggle the table back and forth to raise it back up, at first it will go real slow but after doing this many times it will pop right up.

Warren

Good question! I guess my main reason is that we have a high tidal range in Falmouth (up to 15ft or more) and as you might imagine that can generate some 'interesting' tidal currents. In order to work out the current our chart plotter needs an accurate speed through the water (although I guess what it actually woks out is the combined effect of current and leeway?)
However we can look at current predictions from the charts or the plotter, so that is not essential; although I don't race, on longer passages and beats upwind, I do end up tweaking and adjusting this and that trying to get a better hull speed and SOG isn't quite the same. However I agree it is not worth spending a lot of money on!

The idea of a quick underwater localised scrub to see if that restores the reading (i.e. if it is hull fouling) is a great idea - shame that the water here is only about 55F, but I'll manage somehow!

Dick Walker's solution works best, we have used this method for years.

Just to be a contrarian... We have had Sea Shadow for about 12 seasons, put the table in the down position after the first year and it's never been up since. We call the starboard settee our family room, taking our meals topside at a cockpit table mounted to the binnacle! We also mounted teak blocks around the table to better bear the weight on the corners as one of our grandsons threw himself into the corner of the settee table one evening and ripped all the screws out of the underside of the table.
