[C320-list] Kiwi Prop

No they just rotate the other way, you know, and get used more as we don`t
take our boats out of the water for 4 or 5 months. Winterising over here
means long sleeves.

Chuck, Brian.
Thanks for the info.  Interesting that you have different specifications.  I
was quoted 16" diameter and 20 degree pitch.  The same as Chuck.  Both close
model numbers to ours.
By the serial number on the prop the supplier determined that the prop was
supplied for a Yanmar 3GM30 ( which we have) and a 2.62 gearbox reduction (
we have 2.21)  So the prop didn`t come off a C350 as they have Universal
35hp.
The local supplier said that cutting down the blades is a simple operation,
but it`s all charged for
With the costs involved it could be false economy to get a second hand one.
A new one is $1975 + delivery, and costs are getting close to $1000 for the
scond hand one, depending on what the vendor agrees on .

Colin:

I put on a Kiwi prop this Spring.  It is 16 x 20 degrees, and I think that I
need to make a pitch adjustment as my max rpm dropped to about 3000 rpm.
Otherwise, it provides much better reverse thrust, and a noticeable
reduction in drag while sailing.  I also have the 2:21 reduction gear, so
your local recommendation was correct.

I don't think that you will be able to just shave off the blades, but it is
very easy to replace blades, and I don't think that they are very expensive.
If the C350 had a 1" shaft, then the hub is probably identical        .

I don't know of any propeller manufacturer which gives pitch in degrees.
They are always in inches so a 16.5X11RH prop is 16.5 inches in diameter;has
an 11 inch pitch (which means that for each rotation the propellor will
travel 11inches through the water, disregarding slip) and has a right hand
rotation.CheersJohnM1999#574

Yes John I agree BUT the Kiwis, in their infinite wisdom, set these things
to degrees. See the second page of :-

 http://www.kiwiprops.co.nz/cms/images/stories/kiwiprops/pdf/k3om-2.pdf

They say that 21 degrees is approx 11 to 12 inches pitch

If I buy the second hand one then it will be sent to the Australian dealer
for re-furbishment.

Manufacturer Provided Description
The Catalina 320 is an exciting design that successfully combines the best
modern features and construction with Catalina's hallmark comfort and
value. Based on a high-performance and high-volume computer-optimized hull
design, the 320 is light on the helm and tracks well under sail or power.
Motion and heeling are gentle and predictable. The 320 performs well in a
variety of conditions, with either the available wing or fin keels. Racing
skippers will enjoy the turn of speed and cruisers will appreciate the
additional distance covered in a day's passage. Carrying the deck beam well
aft created space for an exceptionally large cockpit. The wide coamings and
ergonomically correct seats and backs are important features, considering
the cockpit is where we all spend the most time when aboard. The weather
decks are wide with molded-in non-skid and bulwarks, giving easy, sure
access to the foredeck and standard below deck electric anchor windlass.
Other important quality features of the deck include the stout aluminum
framed opening deck hatches and ball bearing mainsheet traveler system. The
rigging and spar systems are engineered for performance and durability. The
fore and aft lowers with intermediate and upper shrouds make the rig very
secure and easy to keep in tune. A rigid adjustable boom vang is standard.
The unique interior is beautifully finished in a rich combination of teak,
ash and maple hardwoods, complementing the beige textured fiberglass
overhead and full hull liner. Attention to details like the custom molded
galley counters with integral backsplashes, three separate lighting
circuits in the main cabin, removable panels in the forward bulkhead, and a
cedar paneled hanging locker set the 320 apart from the ordinary. The
one-piece, integral molded fiberglass subsole grid system is rigid, strong
and requires no maintenance.

You are preaching to the converted advertising a Catalina 320 on this site.

We are only 8 boats behind you and ours was lunched in July 2000 in

Sure I know.  I'm posting in other places but who better to let know a 320
is for sale than the group that loves them.

Hi All,

Has anyone recently installed A/C in their boat.  If so, what type and
size? Where did they put the unit, the supply ducts and the return?

Thanks,

Installed a Flagship Marine unit from Stuart, FL in the aft starboard
locker. Ran 2 ducts on top of shelf in aft cabin, then built a false front
with a new shelf on top. Still leaves room for shirts, towels, etc. to be
stored on the shelf.  I ran 2 ducts this way . . . one to head and one to
salon. Then I ran a duct to aft cabin and one to galley over refrig.  With
the return by the head of person sleeping furthest aft in aft cabin, the
unit can be a bit noisy. Haven't solved that problem yet (just put unit in
at the end of last season). Also need to reduce air flow in head and aft
cabin to increase flow in salon.

Unit works great (could store a side of beef in the head right now
though!). A nice benefit of this unit is that it uses resistance heat,
which means I can run it on the hard in the winter season if I want to work
on the interior of the boat. Apparently, the US Coast Guard uses the system
on their 47' boats.

Right now I can run the AC and the microwave, lights, etc without having to
install a separate power supply for just the AC.

I could not, but our '94 with the two opening panels and the door open
cools down okay. We also pull the blind over the hatch  in the forward
cabin during the day. I tried to find a way to get a duct up there but
looked like it would mean major drilling or put another false front  and
shelf on the starboard side ( I didn't even want to think about doing
that).

This is a work in progress! I'll be fine tuning this all summer probably.

If you want a few pictures of what it looks like, I'll be glad to send them
along when I get up there this weekend.
