I installed a Selden whisker pole on Tegwen (it's a Selden mast). A Selden
supplied track was fastened on the front of the mast and the pole clips on
to a car on that track. The pole is stored on the mast. This makes it
easier to deploy and retrieve and avoids tripping over it or losing it
overboard. As its on the track the final position for the car is adjustable
according to conditions and sail shape. Gybing involves running the car up
the track enough so the pole will dip behind the forestay.
I went for a fixed length pole as one less thing to go wrong or to fail
under heavy conditions. The ability to run the heel up the mast gives some
flexibility as to reach.
