Subject: [C320-list] Engine Fuses and other Questions

Hi Art

I can answer the fuse in the battery line question, as I just changed mine.
They are 20A slow open cartridge fuses in the two battery lines that go to the
charger. I increased the amperage on mine to work with a new 40A charger. The
cables will handle a lot higher amps. This looks like just a bulge in the cable
hanging below the positive terminals, but they are there on my 2000 boat, hull
#676.

You can access the fuel tank by crawling in through the opening on the port side
of the aft cabin. I find that the easiest way to access the fuel shut-off.

Over the Summer, I collected various C320 site e-mails dealing with issues I
felt
it was better to understand before they might occur:
My boat is #680, year 2000:
On the Yanmar engine fuse discussion, three fuses were identified, I located
the two on
the Port side of the engine located just behind the alternator and in front of
the
started motor. I have not located the 3rd fuse??? can anyone better describe
where it is,
what cable it is in and is it a two prong fuse (newer style) or the older
cylinder looking type??

2. One discussion also mentioned fuses in the battery cable lines that
were pushed up under the shelf
overhang in the main cabin settee. I had no luck in locating these either.
If in the lines.... approx. how far from battery terminal??

3. So I do not have to rip out the Starboard Aft locker to see the fuel tank:
what material is the fuel tank made of ???...... one discussion of a failed tank

indicated aluminum.

Thanks,
Art

On hull 690, the fuel tank is an Ezell Model E252-19 made fom .090"
5052 aluminum....
http://www.catalina320.com/mediagallery/media.php?f=0&sort=0&s=20110402165510868

Aluminium alloy 5052 contains nominally 2.5% magnesium & 0.25%
chromium. It has good
workability, medium static strength, high fatigue strength, good
weldability, and very good corrosion
resistance, especially in marine atmospheres. It also has the low
density and excellent thermal
conductivity common to all aluminium alloys. It is commonly used in
sheet, plate and tube form.
5052 has the same high resistance to general corrosion as other non heat
treatable aluminium alloys. It also has the higher resistance to
slightly alkaline conditions common
to the 5000 series alloys. The resistance of 5052 to corrosion in
marine atmospheres is excellent,
exceeding that of 5005, hence the frequent use of 5052 in marine applications.
The corrosion resistance of aluminium alloys relies on a protective
surface oxide film, which when
damaged is readily repaired by the rapid reaction between aluminium
and oxygen. However, the
high reactivity of the base metal can give rapid corrosion if the film
cannot be repaired, so
aluminium alloys are not suitable for use with reducing media. 5052
can be anodised to improve
the corrosion resistance by thickening the protective surface film.

Probably more than you wanted to know!!
