What is the desired bilge pump rating?
I am looking at a hull built in 2005 and Catalina has installed 2.8 GPM pump
at the factory.
Is this sufficient?

-----------------------------

Are you sure its 2.8 GPM? That's very small. I'd be nervous on a boat with
a bilge pump that size even if tied to the dock.

Have a look at http://www.boatus.com/foundation/guide/boat_8.html and read
the third paragraph about water flow through a two inch hole. Then think
about what pump size you think is needed.

My 2007 build Catalina Mk II came with an 1100 GPH bilge pump. That
translates to 18.3 GPM. I fitted another pump as a backup with its own
float switch set a bit higher as a backup and it is rated at 2060 GPH. If
you need a second pump to pump then you need it to be able to pump a lot.
Note that even with these pumps a two inch hole is going to win out.
