As far as the stripped out holes are concerned, do this:

  * Go buy yourself some face-grained wood plugs that are larger than
    the current screw holes (e.g. 1/4", 3/8", etc.)
  * Drill the holes out larger to be the size needed for the plugs (e.g.
    1/4", 3/8", etc.). A Forstner bit would be best, if you have it.
  * Glue the plugs in with a quality wood glue, such as Titebond II.
  * Trim the plugs off flush with the underside of the table. Use a
    flush-trim saw, a chisel, etc.
  * Set the table top back on the post and mounting bracket to line it
    up. Mark the holes with a pencil.
  * Drill pilot holes of a slightly smaller size than the screws you
    will use. Use a tapered bit, if you have one.
  * Put a little wax on the screws.
  * Mount and screw.

Make sure you get face-grained plugs. End-grained plugs are easier to
find, but the screw doesn't bite into the end grain properly.
