[C320-list] Broach / turtle

My definition of turtling is when a boat is upside down with the mast pointing towards the bottom. I've done it many times in smaller day sailors as I was learning to sail; I can't imagine this happening to a 320 unless the keel has fallen off.

Hi Ted,

I don’t think you have anything to worry about! Broaching is possible when
you have a spinnaker up down wind in very heavy air, the boat rounds up
(too much sail for conditions) and the spinnaker fills with water and you
cannot get the spin sheet off or halyard down. The boat will lay there and
possibly fill up with water till something is freed...that is why you should
have hatch boards installed in these conditions. I cannot imagine this ever
happening on a C320!

To 'turtle' is to flip a small boat like a Laser or Opti which requires
climbing back on the boat on the windward side and righting. Again...don’t
worry with the 320.

Have fun and go sail!

Jerry

I was at a round table discussion with a few sea dogs on Friday night. The
topic of broach and turtle came up. This is my second season and I was
wondering if anyone has had this experience.

I have a 1997 with a wind keel hull 424.

Has anyone ever capsized and how long did it take for the Catalina to right
itself? The sea dogs said it would not right itself and requires another
wave to right itself. It would most likely flood itself before righting
itself as well.

Has anyone ever broached what was their experience.

Ted - hull 424
