[C320-list] Packing gland

I have a relatively new boat (2008) with very little use ( sail on an inland lake) of the engine. So far, I have not needed to change out the packing gland stuffing. This fall I'll have the boat hauled to clean and repaint the bottom.

I want to perform maintenance on the packing gland but I wonder if doing so with the boat on the hard for the winter would be taking a chance of problems at relaunch since I won't know if I have the nuts adjusted correctly.  Our marina is not good about notifying you when they launch in the spring,  You get on the list and they call you after the fact so the boat could be in the slip for several days before I know it.

I'd like your thoughts on repacking the gland with the boat in, or out of the water.

I'd also like any suggestions or references to articles on doing this maintenance.
