Especially because it is so difficult to get the muffler out you
should make sure that the joint around the outflow pipe is not
leaking. Getting it out usually puts a lot of stress on this joint. I
thought my muffler was leaking around the bottom flange but it was
only around the outflow pipe which extends thru to the bottom of the
muffler.  If you pressurize the tank with a little water in it you
should hear and see bubbles and air coming out through the leaks.  My
mechanic recommended using rubber flex hose exhaust pipe to connect
the muffler to the engine which is so close and what makes it so
difficult to remove the muffler.
