[C320-list] Diesel Odor

Just received my replacement tank thru Catalina Direct. Going to replace the
tank this fall as it is almost 20 years old and at that age an aluminum fuel
tank is prone to corrosion leaks as reported by several on this list serve
over the last couple of years. I researched the aluminum tank leak issue and
learned that many tanks may last around 12 years and more will leak over
time depending on how often the moisture creating the gunk is removed from
the bottom of the tank where the corrosive mix accumulates. I have a
practice of removing the sender and drawing out a gallon or so from the
bottom every 4-5 years, but do not want to press my luck because the fuel
can leak into the area between the liner and the hull over the long winter
storage period as reported by a 320 owner who had discovered a tank
corrosion problem this spring. His hull production # is very close to my
hull #.

My total cost came to something like $625 including shipping/packaging from
FL and I had a 6 inch access port installed that added $65. Takes about 3
weeks from order to delivery. Can order on-line and then Catalina Direct
will call you to confirm. Half of the cost is charged to your credit card
upon confirmation of the order and then the other half when the tank is
shipped to you. The tank included the sender and all of the fittings; 2
cut-off fuel valves - one for the engine fuel feed line and the other valve
for the fuel return line. The tank wall is much thicker than the original.

Hello Group,
Has anyone encountered this problem:
When I top of the fuel tank and the boat is out sailing/heeling over I get
diesel in the bilge and a smell in the cabin. When the tank goes to half the
issue subsides.
I checked the fill and vent hoses, no visible leaks. I checked the fuel
sender where it enters the tank, no problems there that I can see. I then
check the fuel lines on the Yam-mar, no problems.
What I am tending towards is a hole near the top of the tank where the
banding straps are in contact with the aluminum tank, from dissimilar metal
corrosion since the banding straps are galvanized steel.
I am removing the tank as soon as the boat is hauled and replacing it with a
new tank.
Has anyone purchased new tank and if so from where?
Thanks

I have hull # 53 with a Perkins. I think I've bee told "no zincs", but now
not sure. Anyone have the correct answer to this one? Thanks.
