[C320-list] Hose Priming on Replacement?

Joel - The water intake hose for the cooling system is easy - pop one off,
pop one on. Then just run the engine at a high RPM until you see water
flowing out the transom. I would suggest first removing the hose from the
water pump side with a bowl under the fitting (lowest point in the system).
That will catch most of the water coming out of the pump and out of the
hose.

The hoses for the hot water heater are a little trickier; are you sure they
need replacing? If so, the first thing you'd need to do is to remove the
hot water heater, not an easy chore. But you will need to do so to get to
the side where the 2 hoses attach. The hoses are longer than necessary so
you will be able to move the hot water heater sufficiently enough to get to
the connections. When you remove the hoses from the connections, you will
have a mess to contend with. But with replacing the hoses, you will need to
attach a messenger line to one end of the hoses, pull them through, then use
the messenger attached to the new hoses to pull them back.

After reconnecting the hoses to the water heater and getting the water
heater back in place (after thoroughly flushing the hot water heater of
sand, bits of plastic, etc.), you will fill the system with the appropriate
water/coolant mix from the radiator cap. Then run the engine with the
radiator cap off. The coolant/water will fall as it replaces the air in the
new lines and the air will exit from the open cap. Fill again and put the
cap on. Get the engine up to operating temp. If the alarm goes off, there
is still more air in the system that needs to bleed out so open the cap
again (once the engine has cooled off), put more coolant/water mix in to
bring it up to full, and run the engine again with the cap off for a few
minutes. Then repeat getting the engine up to operating temp. If the alarm
goes off again, start the cycle again until all the air is out.

Hope this helps!

Subject: [C320-list] Hose Priming on Replacement?

While waiting two weeks for a mechanic to replace some of my hoses, I'm
beginning to think I want to tackle the job myself. The exhaust and venting
hoses seem straightforward enough. (if a bit awkward to get to and nasty to
cut.)

What I'm mostly hesitating on his replacing the cooling water intake hose.

I imagine popping the old one off (after closing the thruhull -- heh) will
be a bit messy.

I can deal with the spillage, but I'm concerned about what to do after
installing a new replacement.

Will the yanmar create suction to pull in all the water it needs and burp
out the air, or do these lines need to be somehow primed?

The other 'wet' hose I have questions about would be the pair that leads to
the water heater. Does that line need to be filled with water before
replacing?

I image I'm over thinking this, but wanted to ask the 'professionals' here
for hose swapping advice.

(My main line of thinking being that I don't think anyone did anything
'smart' during the last haulout, and I imagine the hoses could have drained
out.)

Cheers,

Joel
