Steve,

To lift the boom, we relax the rigid boom vang control line.  Our Seldon rigid boom vang has enough uplift from its internal piston to raise the boom.  However, our boat also has a topping lift, so I can use that if I need to.  It is just that the boom vang provides enough lift to raise the boom.  Our topping lift control line is led aft to the cockpit through a bank of rope clutches.
