Dave,
I also noted that you said the piston of the rigid vang. I'm not sure
whether my vang is a Selden but I do know it is spring driven as I replaced
the spring this year hoping to get more cockpit clearance after furling the
Main on the return to the docks. Is the Selden hydraulic or spring
actuated?

Steve,

To lift the boom, we relax the rigid boom vang control line. Our Seldon
rigid boom vang has enough uplift from its internal piston to raise the
boom. However, our boat also has a topping lift, so I can use that if I
need to. It is just that the boom vang provides enough lift to raise the
boom. Our topping lift control line is led aft to the cockpit through a
bank of rope clutches.
