Jon,
The Main is a bit baggy spending a few years on San Francisco Bay. I had
considered that was a possible issue but was hoping a bit of grease
somewhere may save the dollars. The only thing that argued in my mind
against an old Main was that it didn't appear to get significantly easier to
unfurl as more of the sail was let out. On the flip side it did appear to
get somewhat progressively more difficult when furling.

Steve,
If you haven't had this problem in the past and is only a recent issue, it
may be your Main. How old is it? When the Main starts to lose its shape due
to age, the bagginess that tends to develop in the belly of the sail can
make it difficult to furl with an In-mast system. Something to consider...

Have you led the topping lift back to the cockpit?

This is exactly the same behavior with our Selden In-Mast Furler. We raise
the boom up a bit and the sail furls with ease. We never use a winch to
furl.
