Jim,
Have you checked to learn if there is excessive play in the wheel/rudder
control due to a loose or stretched cable that may be adjusted to take up
some slack? Did also check the stuffing compression clamp at the top of the
rudder post to learn if repacking it may help reduce the rudder post
movement? Keep us all informed as this rebuild task may be an area of
maintenance we may all confront sooner or later....Thanks!

only does it under way, not at the dock under power.  Used to only do it on
a sharp port turn but it does it at any point now if you hit the magic
number underway.  The boat was pulled and they felt that there was too much
play in the rudder shaft so......

The next time you run your engine listen for the knock when the transmission
is in neutral.  If you still hear the knock it is probably coming from the
exhaust hose banging against the hull.

If that is the case:
Open your port side aft lazarette and you might be able to see the hose
thrashing about.  I corrected this problem on my boat by installing an
additional hose hold-down plastic strap.  I bought a plastic strap intended
for holding plastic electrical conduit from Home Depot.
