If 2-3 inches can be trimmed off of the rudder bottom with no negative effect, then why wasn't this done by the factory?

Subject: Re: [C320-list] Rudder Depth/wing keel

Interesting. I recently posed a similar question, but have not heard back. In
the process of ordering our new keel I discovered that the current spec for the
rudder for wing keel models is 48” and 51-3/4” for fin keel models. However, our
wing keel model came with the 51-3/4” rudder. An earlier post reported that the
shorter keel from the C-310 was used on the C-320, but the rudder was not
changed. If true, a big if, it would explain the pictures posted about that time
and my keel. I will post whatever reliable information that I
discover.

Skippers, there have been occasional
threads on the concerns of the rudder extending deeper than the WING keel.
I
posted this question to Mr. Gerry Douglas expressing my concern on the rudder
"appearing" to be deeper than the keel. FYI.......Allow me to share his exact
words responding.

  Dear Mr. and Mrs. Wold,
The rudder on your 320 may
appear longer than the wing keel, but it is not when the depth of the keel is
measured from the center bottom of the keel. If you have concerns or your boat
is trimmed down by the stern and is a potential problem for you , 2-3" inches
could be trimmed from the bottom of the rudder with no negative
effects.
Regards, Gerry Douglas

Thought his explanation may be of interest
to some of us owners coming from the designer himself.
