Jeff:

If you're ever in The Nation's Capitol (Ottawa as after all, I be in Canada)
don't depart without making a plan for a meet. You have proven a life saver.
I chewed over your clean up advice, and it was golden. Back on the boat for
only a part-day today as I was doing assorted mast-ups at the club I did
crawl into spaces Catalina's designers never intended passengers to go. I
wiped all the fuel from the top of the tank and then tightened the sending
unit screws - I will be back tomorrow to verify if there is any subsequent
leak in the area before beginning actual clean up. Then I disconnected
enough of the aft water tank to allow me to shift it; when I discovered a
pool of raw diesel which I also removed. Then it was the area where the
stuffing box is. Next I unscrewed and removed the flooring aft of the bilge
to discover and remove another puddle of fuel. Finally I removed the
remaining fuel in the bilge itself.

If tomorrow proves that the leak is resolved I will actually begin to clean
these areas with Simple Green. I will follow this with a cleaner and water
rinse using a sprayer allowing liquid to flow thru these areas and into the
bilge. I will finish by drying these areas before putting the interior back
together.

The point is that prior to your note I thought I was done by merely doing a
Simple Green rinse as was my plan. Thanks to your tip I discovered pools of
diesel just waiting for a bit of heel to evidence itself. You added greatly
to the work I needed to do, but ensured a better result. I owe you.
