[C320-list] Throttle & gear cable clamp detached from inside binnacle

The thread on throttle creep reminded me of the problem I have…

The cables from the separate throttle and gear levers on either side of the binnacle, come together and are clamped to a piece of metal which has a threaded stud. That stud locates in a hole at the rear and some considerable way down the binnacle/pedestal column and is attached with a nut.

On my boat the nit has come off at some point (it was hidden behind an autopilot installation, so I was not aware it had happened) and the metal piece with the stud has come out.

It is WAY to narrow to get a hand down to push it back in place. I realise that I could de-tension the steering cables, remove the chain, drift out the wheel axle and do it that way, but its a pretty big job.

Just wondering if anyone else has perfected a technique to get this small piece back in place.  I am guessing that loosening the clamps on the cable in the access box in the aft cabin, underneath the binnacle might be a start, and possibly disconnecting from the engine end.

But any other suggestions are most welcome.

By the way despite this part coming out the throttle and gears still work ok, the only noticeable effect is that selecting reverse gear causes an increase in engine revs at the same time!
