I think its like a marriage - the key is to have the right partner or partners; everything else flows from that.
The advantage of an agreement is not that you can wave it around in the other persons face if things go wrong, but that it serves as a checklist that ensures you have talked about and agreed how you want to use the boat and share the expenses. Like a pre-nup theres no nasty surprises later on!

If you cant agree on a written agreement then you will never agree on day to day matters!

I take particular pride in the appearance of my boat and my ex-partner and I argued about almost each and every expense. Also he was inclined to DIY and I was inclined to use the local yard. Unless you anticipate paying some expenses versus arguing each point I would not suggest a partnership. One possible solution is to create a maintenance fund to which each contributes monthly, perhaps less arguments if there is available funds to cover such expenses.

The key was that our partner was on the same page about the cut off between DIY projects and paid professional services, about new equipment and upgrades and we both always tried to leave the boat better than when we took it out. Finally we were good friends and cruised together often which helped to eliminate any use conflicts.
