[C320-list] Forespar boom vang

I have a problem with the boom vang that came with my 1997 320. 

 

The top end of the boom vang is completely loose and free range of motion
from fully extended to the bottom of  the vang . There is no downward
pressure (tension).  

 

There is a single pin in the middle of the vang that goes through one side
and out the other. Two screw removed at the top of the vang.  The top end of
the boom vang came out. I remove the pin and tipped the vang nothing came
out. I removed the pin and out came a spring with two blue caps on each end.
It is about 13 inches long. It does not appear broken. 

 

I put the pin back in place and dropped the spring into the vang. Inserted
the top end of the boom vang  and attached the two screws. The vang now
slide out but only goes about half way down.   Is this correct?

 

One of the blue caps is slightly cracked, is there a replacement?

 

Should the spring be on the top end of the vang? Meaning above the center
pin. I am missing something?

 

Is the pin an emergency release? Could it have been released and the spring
drops to bottom of vang?
