When we were considering option for our new loose-footed main, one
consideration was what to do with the Dutchman pockets. I was concerned that
if sewn to the foot of the sail, there might not be enough tension in the
Dutchman lines to properly guide the sail down. Another option was to sew a
bolt rope to the bottom of the pockets and keep them on the boom. Our sail
loft said they had done the latter on a few boats and it seemed to work
well. So, we went for it.

This will be the 2nd season with new main and am pleased with the results.
With the sail up and Dutchman eased, the lines and pockets are not in the
way.

When we removed the sail for the Winter, with the Dutchman control line
slack, we were able to slide the pockets off the boom and wrap the whole
Dutchman up without dismantling any part of it. Mounting the sail this
Spring was no more difficult, perhaps somewhat easier, than dealing with an
attached foot.
