[C320-list] ignition switch and Alternator

My alternator does not appear to be charging the batteries. I put the volt
meter on the terminals on the alternator and 0 volts (positive and negative
screws). 

 

I pulled the alternator out and off to the repair shop. Oscar tested the
alternator and said it is fine, producing 14.5 volts.

 

How do you test the alternator with the volt meter? 

 

What would prevent the alternator from charging the batteries?

 

Could it be the ignition switch?
