[C320-list] How fast have you sailed

Not exactly true. The formula assumes flat water. I have been up to 17 knots on my Olson 30 surfing down waves during a Santa Barbara to King Harbor Race. Max speed according to the formula is 6.5 knots or so. We have hit high 9s downwind on our 320 with Main only from San Miguel Island to Santa Cruz 4 years ago. Waves scary behind us. The Admiral kept saying "don't look back". Boat handled outstanding, no extreme helm. Stayed with a J32 and beat a Catalina 36 into the anchorage. The Cat 36 blew out his reef points on an inadvertent jibe. Looking back we should have just rolled out the genny downwind. We would have gone just as fast and I would not have been so stressed out.
practical application of the Beaufort Scale translated into the relationship between wind force and wind speed!
