My older boat also is developing problems as Warren alluded to.  When I bought the boat I needed to replace 1 bulb and the outer retainer ring partly cracked as I tried to pry it off.  It didn't completely break.  I imagine I'll have more problems. 
I'm sure we can't buy outer replacement rings.  I see that the inner clear lens has 4 screw holes that could be used with very small screws to hold it to the fixture if needed. 
Warren......are you saying you tried replacing the whole fixture, but it didn't fit?
I definitely would like to know what I could get (reasonably) to replace the whole fixture.
