Good point, Graeme. I had this issue. I think if you shorten the hose attached to the thru-hull, that may pull the loop out of the drain line. In my case, I was anxious to get out of the "hole" and just used a bit of line to tie to the hose and pull it up so it would drain. It's been that way now for some years.

Careful with that. If the drain hose has a loop in it that dips below the outlet, any water will form a lock and prevent the gas from going overboard!
I use a foot pump to pump air through it from time to time to ensure it’s clear
