[C320-list] Vibrations at certain RPM Range

Hi all,
My C320 #251 with Westerbeke was vibrating at a couple of rev ranges too. In neutral or in gear it was the same. Somebody on the forum suggested the transmission drive plate and indeed it was. Not a great job to do but new plate solved the issue. New Westerbeke parts are horribly expensive here in Australia but I had a auto clutch mob modify a plate using the centre boss from the original. Engine is much better now.

5 years ago, I had to do my shift cable. While in there, I replaced both cables. You do NOT want to do this job more than once, so go ahead and spend the extra $40 and do both cables while you're at it. Here is a link on how to do this process. Assuming you have the Edson pedestal, this would be the procedure. The below deck part would obviously be different, but the steering pedestal part is the most difficult and non-intuitive part. The rest is fairly straight forward.

https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__spartina.blogspot.com_2009_05_replacing-2Dthrottle-2Dand-2Dshift-2Dcables.html&d=DwICAg&c=3gr2qZ7ZEvzGFhHLB8UWaw&r=UclYbmpxKKMdPPqgh30Tnw&m=CMIAXq_lpMMjaT7zj4lKCcL2oS6YgBlYh5-gIbL1jxQ&s=Dwo-SpJs9VAqhriTShDU0fOcLkFYa8k2Sk2cgLO2fQY&e=

The process in the web link is for a different make/model of boat, but it was the same for me. And I was able to do my own cable replacement and save the yard bill.

Thanks, Doug. That was helpful.

I think I?ve located the correct cables at, believe it or not, West Marine. WM has Teleflex control cables that appear to be correct in 13- and 14-foot lengths. $50 each, which is not out of lie with other stores.

Looking more closely at my cables, though, I see that they are not suffering from corrosion or meat hooks that could cause catastrophic failure, i.e., losing the throttle or shifter at the wrong moment.

Instead, the system seems to be gummy, for lack of a better word. So I?m using WD 40 and silicone spray lube to try to loosen things up before I decide whether to replace everything.

Also, like other people, I need to adjust the tension on the throttle so it doesn?t creep back when I have the autopilot set and I?m away from the helm.

I?ll have to see how it all goes today.

Starting about 3 weeks ago the boat is making a loud racket when the engine is revving between 1500 and 2000 rpm. mostly in the rear of the boat but I cannot pinpoint the source. This occurs both in gear and in neutral so not suspecting shaft alignment. I suspect that it is some harmonic thing. All motor mounts look good and solid and well attached with over a quarter inch between the metal parts. I have check both feeling and/or removed just about every thing in the lockers like spare prop, spare anchor, propane tank, and other items that might be shaking while the noise is occurring. I have felt the fuel tank and engine and nothing feels different than when the noise is not noticeable. I have even gone below the boat and felt the shaft prop cutlass, rudder and all seem solid. The shaft and cutlass bearing were replaced a couple years ago. I have checked the steering mechanism.

To explain the noise/clatter it sounds like a loose hatch, door, or equipment is shaking.

At low revs and higher revs the noise is not there.

Has anyone ever had this problem or know someone that has/had this problem?

Thanks for all your help in past, present, and future. I rely on the questions and answers this list provides.

I too have had throttle cable issues.? My cables seem to be in good shape and when disconnected from the engine work very smoothly.? In an effort to get the throttle to not "creep" down from max rpms I have tightened the adjusting screw inside the binnacle.? I have also tried the "c clamp" in a number of locations and still have the same issue.? (also not crazy about pinching the cable). Result is either it's too stiff at low rpms where I need to "work it" when docking/maneuvering or it's too loose at max rpm setting.? Can't get it "just right."? I have decided I'd rather keep it looser and use a velcro strap to hold it at high rpms when cruising than too stiff for docking/maneuvering.? I have also tried wd40 on the throttle arm on the engine but the spring on it seems just a bit too stiff for ideal adjustment.? I have considered replacing the cables but not sure if I wouldn't still have the problem.? My cables are 5 years older than the recommended replacement time for salt water (1
0 years per Edson).? However, I think careful inspection should show the majority of potential problems with excess wear, yes?? Another question:? Edson recommends keeping the cable as short/direct as possible.? My Harmony has both cables doing a 2' "circle" against the cabin wall prior to entering the deck/bottom of the binnacle.? I get no movement anywhere when the cables are actuated.? Could this be a cause of my issue?? I am skeptical.? Neil Kornblatt 2004 Harmony #973

John:? I have a similar issue from 1800 to 2500 rpms.? But only in forward gear not in neutral or reverse.? I've had it since purchase 2 years ago.? I was told it was a prop issue so I had the prop serviced.? Also replaced the cutlass bearing.? No change.? Still thinking it's the prop and need to find a good prop shop to do some magic on it.? Or change the prop and see if the noise changes.?My engine runs very smoothly at all rpm's.? If yours does it in neutral I'm guessing it can't be a prop issue.? Neil Kornblatt 2004 Harmony #973

I ordered one of these fans after seeing Jacks post ( below)--

I can say it is a lot quieter, and moves more air than my much more

   Definitely recommended.

John,

On my past Catalina 30 I had this issue and the cause was the primary fuel filter was starting to clog. When the engine is at lower reps and not getting a good fuel flow it started to rattle.

This may or may not be your issue but I thought I?d at least respond in the event it is. Another possibility is one of your cylinders has a fuel issue. Could be clogged injectors or a problem with the lift pump.

A potential troubleshooting method for is to see if the engine stalls at idle. If your idle is normal I?d rule out fuel flow.

Good luck,
