[C320-list] Water on floor by water pump

Hi Doug,

I had a similar problem last year. What it turned out to be in my case was
a leak from a rubber ring that the shaft passes through in the water pump.
The rubber ring has the tinniest ring spring you can imagine holding the
rubber against the shaft. After replacing the spring the leak was gone. I
purchased the new ring from an outfit outside of the United States which was
a mistake as there was a significant shipping cost for something that was
about the size of a nickel. Next time I would try to purchase it through
Bay Shore Marine which I think is in Maryland. I am not sure this is the
solution to your problem but the symptoms seem the same.

Subject: [C320-list] Water on floor by water pump

All,

I'm tracing an engine water leak - it appears randomly after running the
engine - some days it's dry and other days, I find a small amount of wetness
on the floor starboard side right by the companionway ladder. Not much,
usually can be cleaned up with a single paper towel.

I have Hull 350 with a Yanmar 3GM engine. I went to the boat yesterday and
ran the engine in the slip for about 30 minutes. Completely dry. Other days
I find a small amount of water there. After shutting down the engine
yesterday, I felt all around the water pump and various connected hoses with
a paper towel, it came back dry everywhere.

Does anyone have ideas? Obviously I suspect the water pump. It looks like
the original pump and hoses, based on the fact that it has the factory paint
on everything, including the hoses. The impeller was changed this spring. I
made sure to clean the impeller cover and mating surfaces before putting in
a new gasket.

I'd love to hear any ideas. Thinking maybe it's time for a new pump since
it's 23 years old, but that's the spendy way of fixing it.
