I had to remove the wood strip and cut a semi circle in the fiberglass lip in order to reach the nuts on the bottom of the stanchion.  One area was most difficult due to the expansion and hardening of the sealant.  The wood strip covers the fiberglass lip semi circle.

My boat was hit buy another and the good news is the only damage was a bent
( beyond repair) stanchion. I was lucky enough to acquire a replacement at
a reasonable price. The problem is I have been unable to remove the old
one. Has anyone done this and have any secrets to share. Even after
removing some paneling, there is not enough room to get a socket wrench in
there. All suggestions, other than buy a new boat are welcome.

Thanks

Harry
