[C320-list] Companion way hatch cover

I’ve noticed on my new (to me) sailboat that there is some grime inside the companion way hatch cover and slides.    The cover  looks like it is attached by several screws on the top, with caulking around the edges. 

I’d like to take the cover off to inspect and clean - has anyone done this before and is a straight forward project like it seems? What type of caulking should be used?
