[C320-list] Which Racor Filter?

Hey David,

I actually just switched from a 10 micron R15T to a Racor R15P, 30 micron filter as I did my winterizing this fall.

At the Strictly Sail show in Chicago this past winter, during a Diesel seminar, one of the Mac Boring (US dealer for Yanmar) reps recommended using a 30 micron Racor. His argument was that a 30 micron puts less strain on the fuel lift pump as its pulling fuel from the tank, it will do it’s job at the 30 micro level and the 10 micro engine filter will catch any smaller impurities in the system. He said as long as your keeping up on your 2 seasons or 100 hrs schedule for the engine filter there is plenty of surface area to clean the fuel at the 10 micron level.

I would defiantly not run the 2 micron Racor and I guess there would be a debate about the 10 or the 30 micron, depending on the quality of the fuel you’re purchasing and how often you are able to do maintenance.

I'm interested to hear what other people are doing and any experiences they may have had.

For example, there is what appears to be the same filter that only filters down to 30 microns. It leaves particles in the fuel that are too big and may clog the engine's filter. Another version filters to only 2 microns. This is filtering particles from the fuel that are so small it may clog almost immediately, leaving you without power soon after replacement.”
