 I do not remove my compass either. 
I have opened my petcock on my muffler a couple times and never get any seepage.  I am guessing the drain is plugged up within the muffer after so many years of use (probably some sediment buildup or a calcium encrustation. I figured that I would unscrew the entire fitting to unclog it if/when necessary and then reseat the fitting.
