[C320-list] Ideas on engine side electrical problem?

I'm a little confused.  You say you haven't yet put the key in the ignition ... But your "console switch is on"?  Do you mean you have turned on your main battery rotating switch and this smoking happens without really doing anything yet on the engine control console?
I don't know if you read previous posts, but I discovered and corrected last year that my glow plugs were on constantly when my keyswitch was in the on/run position.  I discovered this when my engine would not start due to 2 of my 3 plugs being burned out due to this problem.  I corrected it by installing a pushbutton that only energizes the plugs now when I push the button.
