[C320-list] Sailing in the time of coronavirus

Hi All,
There are different rules in different parts of Australia. Here in Adelaide the recommendation is that people stay at home, or at least keep to the social distancing requirements. All of the sailing clubs are closed but some of the restaurant equipped clubs are doing takeaway meals. We are not prevented from going boating, marinas and boat ramps are not closed. Boaties have been warned against actually "going somewhere", as in a destination. My wife and I had a great day on the water yesterday, and caught some crabs and squid that we had for dinner. We are very lucky that the boat is 5 minutes from home.
Cheers to all, hope you can get on the water soon.

Tony Belton

Hey, everybody! As the Mainsheet editor for the C320 group, I thought it might make an interesting story to document the experiences our members are having in this time of social distancing and self quarantine. I know this pandemic is having a huge impact on all people all around the world, but I have enjoyed reading the sailor?s perspective in the posts below. If anyone that wants to sends me their story of how they have been coping with the past few weeks either with or without access to their boat, I will compile an article of boating during a pandemic and submit it for publication in Mainsheet. Your submission can be as long or as short as you want, but send it directly to me at boatnboot at me.com <mailto:boatnboot at me.com> and I?ll see what I can put together.

I think we should document this experience as it relates to our love of boating.

Launch of my boat is delayed as the yard in Annapolis is closed down except for live aboards. Recreational boating is banned in Maryland right now so even those who have a boat in the water can't go sailing.

My marina is Shipwright Harbor Marina in Deale, Maryland (about20 miles
south of Annapolis). The boat spent the winter in the water so I'm grateful
that I don't need to get splashed.

As Scott pointed out that we are not allowed to go sailing while the
stay-at-home order is in effect but liveaboards may continue to stay on
their boats. The order does not address staying on your boat if it is not
your full-time residence but I'm interpreting it to mean that is OK. I
spend 2-3 nights a week on the boat right now.

I do take this stuff very seriously but all I do is get in my car in D.C.,
drive the hour to the Chesapeake, park in the lot, and walk to the boat. I
bring all my provisions so I don't need to make any stops.

Social distancing afloat helps me keep my sanity during this difficult time.

Be safe, everyone.

My boat is still tied up in its winter storage slip at Sailing Associates Inc. marina on the Sassafras River, upper Chesapeake Bay.
I was working diligently and had both the diesel & boat ready to move to my assigned mooring by April 1st.

When on Friday March 27 the marina asked that we don't come back based on Maryland governor Hogan stay at home order.

Now I drive from South Jersey through Delaware to Maryland and although I don't stop, don't contact anyone, direct ride to the boat, no contact with anyone, I have been staying at home since then. Lucky my employer allows me to work from home.

It has been very frustrating not to get the boat and complete so many items that I had planned.
But the away from boat time has allowed for additional study of C320 and planning for when I return.
Thankful for the internet.

This too will pass. And out sailing again!

Here in Ontario at the CFB Kingston Yacht Club we are temporarily shut down. Scheduled 16 May launch pushed to 06 June , and that is not likely to happen. Small work parties 5 or less allowed on site to prepare for a potentially disastrous spring flood. We suffered significant damage just last year. On our 24th of May long weekend a bunch of us sailors would raft up at the St Lawrence River Park Island, Cedar. Won?t happen this year and we?ll sadly miss it.

Here is the latest from MD DNR. You can launch your boat and move it to your slip:

The FAQ page has been updated with a few additional points about boating (at the very bottom): https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__news.maryland.gov_dnr_2020_03_31_frequently-2Dasked-2Dquestions-2Dabout-2Dgovernor-2Dhogans-2Dstay-2Dat-2Dhome-2Dorder_&d=DwICAg&c=3gr2qZ7ZEvzGFhHLB8UWaw&r=UclYbmpxKKMdPPqgh30Tnw&m=NgPrODlCFdXlMt81J9fHuut1MLgDE9YgKlKbW1-L6G4&s=A9shiMPd6GZND7zvA4t--ZEySZ_mUA4o24XXCjbRnoA&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__news.maryland.gov_dnr_2020_03_31_frequently-2Dasked-2Dquestions-2Dabout-2Dgovernor-2Dhogans-2Dstay-2Dat-2Dhome-2Dorder_&d=DwICAg&c=3gr2qZ7ZEvzGFhHLB8UWaw&r=UclYbmpxKKMdPPqgh30Tnw&m=NgPrODlCFdXlMt81J9fHuut1MLgDE9YgKlKbW1-L6G4&s=A9shiMPd6GZND7zvA4t--ZEySZ_mUA4o24XXCjbRnoA&e= >
Here is some more guidance received from "up the chain":

Regarding delivery of boats: Marinas and marine transport businesses can deliver boats to the boat owner's homes or boat slip.

(Moving a boat from a marina or boatyard to your home dock or boat slip is allowed. Just not general recreational boating. We realize that this time of year a lot of people are de-winterizing their boats.)

Regarding people traveling through/in Maryland waters: There are no orders at this time limiting travel through Maryland by boat. However, if travelers were in close contact with others out of state, we are urging them to avoid close contact with others in Maryland and self-monitor for symptoms. If any symptoms develop, they should self-quarantine and contact a health care provider. We are also urging travelers to follow CDC guidance on domestic travel which can be found here: https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.cdc.gov_coronavirus_2019-2Dncov_travelers_travel-2Din-2Dthe-2Dus.html&d=DwICAg&c=3gr2qZ7ZEvzGFhHLB8UWaw&r=UclYbmpxKKMdPPqgh30Tnw&m=NgPrODlCFdXlMt81J9fHuut1MLgDE9YgKlKbW1-L6G4&s=csEofbu5TqKwyo6PcYJzPWPDfHe3mHZWrKPNBUJ7AKo&e= <https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=https-3A__www.cdc.gov_coronavirus_2019-2Dncov_travelers_travel-2Din-2Dthe-2Dus.html&d=DwICAg&c=3gr2qZ7ZEvzGFhHLB8UWaw&r=UclYbmpxKKMdPPqgh30Tnw&m=NgPrODlCFdXlMt81J9fHuut1MLgDE9YgKlKbW1-L6G4&s=csEofbu5TqKwyo6PcYJzPWPDfHe3mHZWrKPNBUJ7AKo&e= >
There is no safer place, than staying at home! If having to get out on the water, please make sure to wear a Personal Flotation Device (PFD), the water temperature in the Chesapeake Bay is currently only 51.8 degrees fahrenheit.

Most of the major offshore races have been canceled on the East Coast. I was scheduled to sail in the Annapolis to Bermuda race, and it was canceled yesterday. We may try the Block Island race, which has been moved to June 19th pending further developments (original start date for ?Thrash to the Onion Patch? which has also been canceled). Our marina is closed but they said we can still access the boat (Old Point Comfort marina in Hampton, VA). However, the bath house is not getting cleaned, so we have to make other arrangements (we are 3.5 hours from our boat). We plan to go next weekend for our first sail this year (assuming everything runs once I reinstall the heat exchanger tube). Of course, I also wonder if services like Sea-Tow are working. I hope to never need them but I expect they would be the only option if I ran into mechanical difficulty given the limited boating presence on the water.
