Okay, I’m not really going to uck on the end of the hose to
start a diesel siphon!

Actually, that’s why we use a shaker siphon. Tap the end a few times to prime it, and away it goes! You never suck on the hose. You can also use a siphon tube with a squeeze-bulb primer.
