[C320-list] Engine hours meter/NMEA0183

Please help with a newbie question:
1) The engine hours meter doesn’t work for our old Perky (says 15 hours but thats off by a couple of orders of magnitude I guess). How do I trace the fault?  Is it possible to by gauges suitable for a 1995 vintage Perkins?  I’d like to keep track of the engine hours for maintenance purposes.
