Hi John,
Generally when you have a short in the coax/antenna you are more likely to
damage the transmitter. I would be very surprised if it damaged the
receiver. Recommend you get a SWR meter. They are not very expensive and
usually come with instructions. Will allow you to diagnose your antenna and
cable. From my experience the problems are usually a crushed coax but more
likely a corroded connection.

I just had the radio repaired as it would transmit but not receive. When I
hooked it up it received the WX channel for 5min then it quit.Just wondering
if a short in the antenna would damage the radio?
