I just installed the same, but opted not to run the remote wiring up the binnacle tubing.  I mounted the remote mic on the port side of the cockpit right in front of the propane tank compartment .... Out of the way enough, but easily accessed at the helm and the sound is great. The wiring ran pretty easily through the port side wiring channels.
Previously I had an old standard VHF radio (no DSC).  The GX1850GPS has a built in GPS that works to establish DSC without having to be connected to a chart plotter.

Radio is mounted by the chart table, and the remote mic is on the binnacle. Total cost was about $335 at The GPS Store.

I paid my electronics guy $100 to put it in. We reused the wiring that was already in place for the old remote mic. Pinouts are available from Standard Horizon’s tech support—they’re good, and nice folks.

Hope that’s helpful!
