I had a similar problem on my auto helm ST 4000. I also corrected that by cutting off the end of the handle so it will clear the instrument pod.
Does anyone know a person that understands directing an electrical issue with the old auto helm ST 4000. I had to disassemble my flex compass because the lead weight had come loose I reattached it and re-soldered a wire that looks like it had come off. When I restart The auto helm it makes the usual sounds everything seems fine but when I engage it it has reverse the direction so it tries to correct in the wrong direction. I have tried the calibration sequences that each time I do it behaves the same way it’s as if somehow it has just reversed the direction?
