[C320-list] Forward hatch leak

Folks have replaced just the gasket with success, but based on my
experience with the forward hatch, I would love to know how they achieved
said success. Once you go through the process of replacing the lens and
the DOW 795 sealant it will become apparent that after years of 'hardening'
getting a new gasket to seal against the older sealant (the 795) seems like
an optimistic endeavor.

At a minimum rebed the lens and buy new gasket. The 795 seal is the most
likely suspect, and no amount of fidgeting with the gasket resolved the
root cause for me.

If the deck frame is leaking which was not an issue for me, that shouldn’t
be an issue.

As to the bimetal corrosion issue between the aluminum frame and the
stainless screws. After learning my lessons on the salon and head
hatches, the solution is to leave the hinges attached to the lens frame.
Those self tapping machine screws are generally the problem. The wood
screws used to attach the hinges to the deck frame and penetrate the deck
should come out easy. There is no need to remove the hinges from the lens
frame for any repairs.

Finally, go gently with any scraping to remove old caulk. Plastic razor
blades are your best friend. You can damage the anodized aluminum if you
aren’t careful. To clean the frames, aluminum wheel cleaner does wonders.

Happy hatch fixing.
