Marko,

Are you sure you'll be able to get parts for your Schafer 2000 furler? I also had some issues getting the upper swivel up and down the furler foil on my 1995 320, because some of the rivets in the joints on the foil were sticking out. But when I spoke with Schafer they told me that they didn't have replacement parts for my 1994 vintage foil. In the end I drilled out a few rivets and replaced them, holding my breath the whole time because I was told that if I had damaged the joiners I'd have to replace the whole furler. It worked out, but it was nerve-wracking.

As for whether to use wire or rod rigging, has the 5/16 wire caused you any problems? I haven't priced it, but I'm guessing that solid rod rigging would likely cost good bit more. And the cost of having a 43 foot stainless rod shipped to your boat sounds expensive. I was able to replace my wire forestay myself by having a local rigger swage a 1/2 inch stud on one end of the wire, and installing a StaLok swageless eye on the other end after I slid the new wire through my existing furler foil. (I could have bought bare wire and used StaLoks on both ends, but the swaged stud was actually cheaper.) I don’t think there is an equivalent do-it-yourself fitting for stainless rod rigging. I'm not sure that the return on those extra costs would be worth it on a boat like a 320.

Marko-
You seem to be talking about your forestay cable and Schaefer furler (not forestay).

I'm currently replacing the six extrusions with new joiners. My current forestay is a 5/16 19 strand cable in a twisted pattern. My ask is if I should consider replacing it with a solid rod instead of what I've had all these years. My forestay is a Schaefer 2000.
Any advice would be much appreciated.
