[C320-list] Dropping rudder? maybe. Experiences out there?

I already spoke with Catalina.  "They/he" said there is no way to shim.  The "trunk" that holds the rudder shaft has the shaft fiber-glassed in.  If it is working loose then the fiberglass is getting compressed.  No bearings or way to adjust.  That's what I was told.  Shims would only be temporary fix at best (according to who I talked to about 6 months ago.  I may just live with it for now. It is not much right now.  My main concern is it getting worse the more it moves.  I like the idea of dropping it while in the sling.   Remember you have to drop the rudder then drill holes then wax and re-insert the rudder.  I may ask them if when the sling isn't too busy, or if they will even do it.  Thanks for the idea.  I really, really need to know now "exactly what is involved with dropping the rudder.  I will call Catalina.

Thanks,

I "may" have to drop the rudder to eliminate some wobble. Preparing to install linear auto-helm.? Wobble is not bad so may not do it but...has anybody done that?? Looks like you remove the steering cable "disc" (has through bolt), then one bolt in the emergency tiller compartment.? How much does the rudder weigh?? Looks like I need to haul it and block it about 3ft higher to allow it to come out?? Any experiences?NOTE/FYI: CD has a kit for this so they must be aware. Short version: Drop rudder, wax rudder post, drill 3 holes around top and bottom of trunk, re-insert waxed rudder post, inject some sort of resin/filler, then let harden.

Thanks,

Has anybody removed the pedestal? Mine has a slight leak someplace and the PO did some bad looking caulk job. Also the base is pitting and the paint is flaking off. I would like to remove the whole thing and clean it all up but that seems a major task? What about any adjustments I would mess up?

Thanks,

Once it is on the hard, some are able to dig a hole below rudder and drop it into that.? I have seen some using ratcheting straps to lower then lift back.
Ken Geiger#765 2000 NorthernDream on the hard near Georgian Bay?

Definitely will need to dig a hole or block the boat high. Be sure to talk to the yard manager about it before ou dig.

Only other option would be to do some disassembly work before haul-out and have everything ready to drop the rudder while the boat is in the slings. Then put it back together right before launch.

Might also check with Warren Pandy at the Catalina factory to see whether you can adjust the packing gland or add new shims from inside the boat to tighten this up a bit (or from below with just partially dropping the rudder on land). Ideal case would be if you could just undo the packing gland and add Delrin shims or whatever they use.  But I really don't know the process first hand.  I vaguely recall something about adding shims to the rudder post assembly but could be mistaken.

Hi, there are some articles on C320.org about shunning the rudder post to deal with play. Just search rudder play on the site and they should come up.

I have slight movement in my rudder and will deal with at the next haul out. I have about 2 mm of play at the rudder tip so not to much at this time.

Good luck, Ian Neale.
