[C320-list] C320-list Digest, Vol 4407, Issue 1

In regards to eliminating the macerater pump, I will tell a story without getting too graphic.

We stayed for a while on a trip in a relatively cheap marina with a broken pump out.

We did our best to avoid filling the holding tank. However, it turned out we guessed wrong.

The resulting mess was something. The vent hose became clogged. When I opened the pump-out cap after the pump out was repaired, there was a geyser.

My point is that no matter how much you care for the environment, there are times when you have to use it to avoid disaster because there are so few pump outs in many places.

My rule is to do it in tidal areas whenever possible. However ...

A sewage line once broke in Miami and dumped millions of gallons of raw sewage into the bay. Everyone predicted disaster.

The bay flushed itself clean in 3 or 4 days. Not saying that's a good practice, just that 10 gallons of sewage won't cause the end of the world.

When I purchased the boat, it had the original waste hoses.
Vague sharp odor.
I purchased Peggie Halls book and added Raritan KO & CP as per her recommendation.
No change.
As per the book applied wet towel on the hose, allowed to dry & smell test for odor from hose permeation.
Following Dave Hupe's report on replacing his waste hoses, I replaced mine, not very difficult.
The new hoses ended the vague sharp odor.
Also after pump out & flush of the holding tank, I open the access cover, don gloves & hand clean the tank.
Followed by Clorox & water. let it soak, pump out.
I add Thetford Aqua Max tablets to the tank when in use.
No odors.

The base for original toilet cracked and I recently replaced the whole toilet assembly with new.
New assembly fit exactly as the old, thankfully easy job.

When I purchased PLYMOUTH (621) the hoses had been replace. After the first year I began to get "stink'. It seemed worse right after I pumped out. In checking I found that the bolts holding the macerator pump together had corroded badly and was causing a leak into the bilge. Since I don't tale the boat into the open ocean, I decided to eliminate the macerator pump and plumb the holding tank directly to the deck fitting. I sealed the through hull and in addition to eliminating the "stink" I picked up some storage space. (and saved a couple of hundred dollar for a new pump)

I had a similar problem and tried Campa-Chem that I purchased from Walmart.
It's called a holding tank deodorant. I no longer have any odor Six pack is not expensive and lasts a long time. I simply put a few ounces periodically in the toilet bowl and flush into the holding tank and that is adequate
