[C320-list] Saloon table

Hi
Can anybody tell me how the salon table pedestal clamp works?  I have the knob you turn to hold the pedestal in position, one metal piece with a threaded hole and a reference piece to hold it in position in the plastic bracket and lastly a metal piece that looks curved on one side to the shape of the fluted column. 
I can get the knob threaded into the first plate, the second piece just falls inside the column. 
Questions
1.  Is the curved metal piece supposed to be affixed to the end of the screw.
2.  Am I missing some piece that I no longer have

Any advice would be appreciated?
