Ken, FWIW I have heard some people using a large bike or motorcycle innertube on the Capstan to get a "grip" on the chain so it won't slip.  I have not tried it yet but may do that if windless project is just not worth it.??

Thanks,

Although probably Sacrilegious,  we have the original smooth drum windlass on 320 #765 with 15 ft of 3/8 chain and 250 ft rope.  We sail freshwater.  I do 2 wraps of rope onto the drum and tail it up.  When it gets to the chain I just pull the chain onto the drum and continue until the anchor is nested.  Now over the years the chrome is off the drum in places but I expect this to become the next owners problem.  Anchor is a 15 Kg CQR clone.

Not high on my list but looking into replacing my "working" windlass with one that can take a chain. Getting older.  My "original" windlass has a "smooth" capstan and I never use it anyway.  I can still haul it myself.  Most upper body workout I typically get on long cruises.  I remember previous threads that mentioned that they no longer make a replacement Capstan and I would have to replace the whole windlass????  Anybody done that recently?  Budgeting/estimated/rough cost?
Please don't look up anything.  May never do this.  Just looking for previous experiences out there.

Thanks,
