Charles--This is not the problem. I had been running both the hot and cold water for at least 10 minutes so water had been flowing through the hot water tank for a while before the water flow stopped abruptly. I have followed the same routine for 22 years and this if the first time I have had this experience.

Might be that the pump was filling the hot water tank.  Had it been emptied
before this?  This has happened to me after refilling the tanks during
spring commissioning if I don't ensure the hot water tank fills during the
tank fill process.
