On the shore power issue, I second the recommendation to get a non-contact voltage tester. They make it easy to see if voltage is present in a wire without having to get a bare-metal connection.

I also recommend starting to diagnose any wiring problem by looking at places where things are connected. Wire rarely breaks in the middle of a wire run. So following the wire from the stern to the breaker panel may not be necessary. I'd look for the next place that wire was connected to something.

Although I gather that later boats had the battery charger located in between the lazarette and the breaker panel, the shore power on my 1995 No. 232 runs from the breaker in the port lazarette, through a wiring channel on the port side where the deck turns down to meet the hull, then behind the top of the galley cabinets, and down to the "main" shore power breaker at the top left corner of the breaker panel. If you have power on both sides of the breaker in the lazarette, and no power at the inlet side of the "main" shore power breaker at the nav station, then the problem would be somewhere in between. On my boat that is mostly just a straight wire run, and less likely to be the culprit. But whether there is anything in between those two breakers may vary based on the year your boat was built.

Also, if your boat has a combination voltage inverter/ battery charger, the 120 volt shore power probably runs through the inverter/charger before it ever gets to the 120 volt outlets in the cabin. On my boat, the shore power runs to the first breaker at the top left of the breaker panel, then to one of 4 120 volt breakers on the bottom left of the breaker panel, which control the inverter/charger, the 120 volt side of the water heater, the air conditioner, and the 120 volt outlets. But power for the outlets first runs to the inverter/charger (which is underneath the starboard side of the bow cabin on my boat), then back to the breaker panel. If the inverter/charger dies or the breaker for the inverter/charger trips, there is no 120 volt power at the outlets. The non-contact voltage tester will help you to figure out where the power reaches and where it doesn't.

One more caution: On my boat all of the wiring to the 120 volt and 12 volt breakers and the "1/2/Both" battery switch is exposed if you open up the breaker panel. I disconnect any power source I can before I work in there. But you obviously can't disconnect any system while you are testing for voltage in that system. So I take a clean dry towel and cover up whatever part of the panel I'm not testing at the moment, to reduce the risk of accidentally dropping a tool on a live electrical contact and causing a shock or a fire.

Good luck sorting out your shore power issues.

Mark Seyler
