[C320-list] Running rigging

I have a few additional suggestions when replacing running rigging.

I agree that sewing the ends of the old and new lines together is the most secure way to replace a line. If sewing is an issue for you, I have also had success with attaching a para cord to the old line as a messenger, then attaching the new line to the other end of the para cord after you have run the para cord through all the sheaves. But you have to make sure the knot where you attach the para cord to the old and new lines isn't too big around to pass through the sheaves. I have had success tying a series of 4 or 5 single hitches in the para cord around the rope, and then taping over the hitches on the rope, to keep the hitches from coming loose.

For any line that runs through the line clutches on the cabin top, it will be easier to get the line through the clutch if you use a slot head screwdriver to pry up on the aft end of the "gripper" in the clutch while you feed the line through.

Also, the outhaul on my No. 232 has a three-part purchase inside the boom. The wire rope that exits the aft end of the boom and connects to the clew of the mains'l ends in a becket block inside the boom. The fiber rope control line for the outhaul enters the boom at the gooseneck, runs aft through the boom until it turns around the becket block attached to the wire rope, runs back forward to another block fixed inside the boom, turns around that block and returns aft to be tied onto the becket on the block attached to the wire rope. To remove the old contol line you have to pull the becket block out of the aft end of the boom and untie the fiber rope from the becket. You can sew the new fiber rope to either end of the old rope, and pull it out the other end. But you have to tie the aft end of the new fiber rope to the becket block to complete the replacement.

Depending how your reefing line(s) are set up, they might also run through a block inside the boom. (Mine do not, but the diagram on the Association website suggests some do.) Just make sure you find both ends of the line before trying to pull one end out of the boom.

Good luck with your project!

And Practical Sailor recently had an article on adding a reeving eye (sewn one is easy) to halyards:

But I have done what Jack suggested, simply sewing the two ends together and covering with a little tape. Easy.
